Act 1 rewrites

I've just released a chunky set of rewrites based on the feedback I got from the initial release. The story still runs up until the same point, for now, but there is quite a lot of new prose and dialogue overall (roughly 20% more lines). The main changes are:

  • The intro. It wasn't up to the standard of the rest of the game, particularly the book which was too jokey and not mysterious enough, as well as not giving you enough dialogue options. It's been substantially rewritten and the tone is quite different - and there is now some actual lore behind it that you'll get to discover in future updates!
  • The order of scenes. Interrupting the action at the camp with not one but two flashbacks was too much jumping around in time. The action now starts in your cabin on the Red Hand rather than dumping you straight into a potential battle.
  • More consequential choices. Every character now has a character-defining choice (the first of several) to make in the flashback that they experience. Generally speaking the major consequences of your choices will come into play later - as will the consequences of certain NPCs being alive, dead or captured - so you'll have to trust me on this, but the impact on the direction of the story is quite significant. I've also added a bit more flavour for certain more cosmetic choices (like Jhorrick's hammer having different magical effects depending on the name you gave it!)

Thanks for everyone who gave feedback for the initial release. For the next update, I'm working on the aftermath of the encounter in the camp - you'll get to investigate the area and talk to your companions and learn about their backstories, as well as what they think of your actions so far! On the technical side, I'm rewriting the UI in React and adding some analytics capability - I really want to know how many people are playing as each character or choosing certain paths, and I'd love to be able to post some of stats for you!
